The preparation of the udders and teats before milking is partof the daily work routine on every dairy farm. Various goals are pursued with this routine work atevery milking session: One goal is the normal cleaning of coarse dirt such as faeces and straw fromthe udders and teats. Another is that preparation of the udder should stimulate the cow, so that sufficient oxytocin is released (as was reported in Issue 3/11 of "die grüne").

Cleaning the teats before milking is very important to udder hygiene and cow stimulation to let her milk flow. Several cleaning products are in use; cotton cloth, paper and even a rotating brush. Originating from Switzerland udder wool is gaining popularity. (22 - dairy&beef vol.4 no.1 ‘05) |
